Associate Test Engineer I – #0002036

Space Telescope Science Institute

This is a Full-time position in Baltimore, MD posted May 3, 2021.

Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is the science operations center for several NASA missions, including the most famous space observatory in history; the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).

We also lead the science and mission operations for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), planned to launch in October2021 and will perform parts of the science operations for the Nancy Grace Roman Survey Telescope (Roman), in formulation for launch in the mid-2020s.We are seeking candidates for an associate level Test Engineer position to join our Commanding Certification Branch in our growing Systems Engineering, Integration & Test and Flight Operations Division (SEITO).

You have 0-2 years of experience in software development and testing and recent graduates and soon to graduate candidates are invited to apply.

In this position you will support the planning and execution of complex systems for the James Webb Space Telescope.

Unfortunately, we cannot arrange an onsite visit prior to your decision.Your Role of a Test Engineer:In this job, you will:become knowledgeable in the operation of the JWST science instruments and spacecraftdevelop onboard software (JavaScript) to command the JWST science instrumentssupport all aspects of front-end and back-end software designdevelop science operation products to test onboard script executionoperate spacecraft, observatory and ground system simulators and/or actual flight software and hardwaredevelop tools and applications to support testingYour Qualifications Successful applicants are typically eager to learn and grow in their career, demonstrate great versatility and teamwork, and are creative problem-solvers with strong verbal and written communication skills.You have a Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Astrophysics, or a related scientific field, and a minimum of 0-2 years of academic or work experience in software development and testing.

Substitution of additional relevant education or experience for the stated qualifications may be considered.

Also, qualified candidates will have strong analytical, problem solving, verbal and written communication skills, and a team player mentality.

The starting salary is commensurate to the candidate’s education and experience.We are looking for applicants with experience with one or more of the following:Utilizing programming technologies to code algorithms that satisfy software requirementsDesigning and executing tests to verify software requirements, especially for end-to-end testing of software systemsDesigning and developing large complex software systemsExperience with scientific spacecraft instrumentation command and control functionsWorking knowledge of JavaScript, Python or Java or other programming languagesSoftware development utilizing relational databasesKnowledge of NASA scientific spacecraft is helpfulCandidates must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident.
